Diabetes Breakfast: A delicious healthy breakfast is a must for people with diabetes. The right diabetes breakfast can help control blood sugar levels throughout the day, so it’s worth it to plan and prepare early. Most restaurants have their own options, from pancakes, waffles, cereal bars, and even yogurt and cheese. It’s nice to have an abundance of carbs to give your body some energy to start the day off right. Here are a few of my favorites.
Oatmeal Is Best Diabetes Breakfast
Breakfast for me is a bowl of cereal with low carb oatmeal. I like to add a spoonful of low carb honey and a cup of low carb coffee or tea. Any favorite breakfast spice can work, such as cinnamon or nutmeg. You can also choose from recipes like French toast, ham and cheese, bacon and eggs, or just banana or apple juice for your morning sugar fix.
Porridge is Also a Healthy Diabetes Breakfast
My favorite healthy breakfast is porridge. Porridge can be made with two kinds of cereals: one that has all natural nuts and one that has no nuts. I like to eat plain unsweetened porridge. If you’re not a fan of nuts in your porridge, you can always add some walnuts, hazelnuts, or just some spices and herbs to make it more interesting. My favorite spice to add is cinnamon.
One of the best things about sugar free granola is that there are so many different options for ingredients. It’s possible to have a variety of nuts, seeds, and/or fruits included to make a very interesting breakfast each day. There are also different variations depending on what company you buy your cereal from. Many companies offer chocolate and peanut butter combinations, as well as oatmeal and apple slices.
Nuts are an excellent source of fiber and protein. If you’re a fan of peanut butter or some other type of nut, try serving that same sandwich filling but instead of using the peanut butter, substitute with a slice of fruit. Not only will your breakfast not only be less sugar loaded, it will be higher in fiber and protein. This is just one of the many healthy diabetic snacks you can enjoy during the day.
Other Healthy Diabetes Breakfast
Other healthy breakfasts include muffins, waffles, pancakes, and rice. These are great choices, too, because you can use the same method to make a savory breakfast without adding high-glycemic carbohydrates. There are also many options for snacks that are healthy and provide plenty of carbs for those who need them throughout the day.
Plan a Schedule Breakfast
The first thing that you should do is plan a breakfast schedule. Your diabetes specialist can help you with this. He or she will give you specific instructions about what foods you should be eating on a every morning basis. In general, you want to start the day with a moderate sized breakfast and take a small lunch. By the time you head off to bed around 8:00 p.m., your blood sugar levels should be up and be ready to handle the second half of your day.
Avoid These Mistakes
One of the many diabetic breakfast mistakes to avoid is skipping breakfast. In order for your body to effectively control blood sugar levels you need to eat at least eight small meals a day. Skipping breakfast just means you’ll be taking in a lot of unneeded sugar, which leads to more diabetes. If you’re diabetic, you may have been told to stay away from fruit since oranges and other fruits can spike your blood sugar as easily as any other food.
The breakfast you eat is more important than dinner because it allows you to still satisfy your hunger between meal times. Having a bowl of pasta, rice, or waffles with a cup of fruit juice in the afternoon is great. But having a large bowl of cereal with a glass of milk at night will provide you with carbohydrates for the entire day. If you find yourself getting hungry in the morning, it’s okay to break up the carbohydrates in the cereal (especially if you have a high-glycemic cereal) into several smaller meals throughout the day.
Diabetic friendly breakfasts are no longer difficult to find. There are many ladies who are switching to healthier options. No longer does it have to mean that you’ll have to deprive yourself of one of the most important meals of the day. Try making breakfasts that are easy to make and high in the vitamins and nutrients that help control blood sugar.
